J.S. Bach’s masterpiece, telling the story of Christ’s trial, torture and crucifixion.
St Matthew’s words of witness are interspersed with passages of commentary as the narrative unfolds, full of impotent grief and love. Bach’s sublime music intensifies the drama and exquisite pain of the language.
Expressing the strongest universal human conditions and emotions, this mighty work has an extraordinary power to touch and move, regardless of the listener’s own faith.
The City of London Choir, singing in English, is joined by The Hanover Band, a ripieno chorus of girls and outstanding soloists.
